MOOLAP WETLANDS

Geelong Environment Council's vision for the former Cheetham salt works is a world-class bird-life park and conservation reserve. This would enable the preservation of a large, unique habitat which is relied upon by many species of flora and fauna. It is particularly valuable for local and migratory water birds.

This would be a great asset for Geelong and would also fulfil an extremely important purpose: the ongoing protection of the low-lying suburbs of Newcomb, Whittington and Moolap from the sea. The former salt works has an existing, substantial and very effective sea wall which should remain intact so that it can continue to provide valuable protection for these heavily populated areas.

Our vision booklet details the issue in a comprehensive manner.

THE DISCUSSION PAPER- "CONSERVING MOOLAP" SCENARIO

This is the scenario from the Moolap Coastal Strategic Framework Plan discussion paper that we are endorsing. We believe it is in broad terms, the best vision for the area considering conservation values, protection of urban areas from climate-change induced sea-level rise and storm surge and retention of existing industry. Our response to the discussion paper is downloadable using the following link:
